Many perks come with the job of being President of the United States. You get to be one of the most powerful people in the world, and everyone is supposed to respect you. But when reality television star Donald Trump stepped into office on January 20, 2017, the rules of engagement were changed. No longer was the office of the presidency a thing to respect. With Trump, a mean-spirited, bully calling the shots on behalf of millions of Americans, no one felt like they had to pull back their punches anymore when it comes to the man in the Oval Office.
Although approval ratings for the president are at an all-time low, Donald Trump doesn’t realize no one likes him.
That’s why he recently tried to use his private White House screening room to schmooze with some of Hollywood’s elite.
This in-home theater is reserved for the First Family, so they can see blockbuster movies before the average American gets a chance to watch them.
This week, Oscar-winner Tom Hanks releases his new movie, “The Post.” The highly anticipated film, where Hanks starts alongside Oscar-winner Meryl Streep, is supposed to be one of the biggest movies in recent history.
Because it is expected to be such a hit, the Hollywood Reporter asked Tom Hanks if he would host a private screening for the president and his family at the White House.
Tom Hanks offered the following blunt reply.
“I don’t think I would. Because I think that at some point – look, I didn’t think things were going to be this way last November. I would not have been able to imagine that we would be living in a country where neo-Nazis are doing torchlight parades in Charlottesville and jokes about Pocahontas are being made in front of the Navajo code talkers. And individually we have to decide when we take to the ramparts.”
Tom Hanks is courageously saying “NO” to President Trump because he is a mean-spirited, sore loser.
Hanks continued by saying:
“You don’t take to the ramparts necessarily right away, but you do have to start weighing things. You may think: ‘You know what? I think now is the time’ This is the moment where, in some ways, our personal choices are going to have to reflect our opinions. We have to start voting, actually, before the election. So, I would probably vote not to go.”
Hanks has been a quiet Democrat and a faithful Christian for a long time. But in the year that Trump has been president, Hanks and others are seeing that being a silent participant in the American fabric is no longer an option. We need to be vocal and speak out against the things that Trump is doing that are destroying America.
Trump failed to adequately condemn the white supremacists and neo-Nazis who killed innocents in Charlottesville and held rallies in other parts of the country. Trump issued a travel ban against Muslims as soon as he entered the office, which is an unprecedented act of bigotry for the president.
Hanks has the right idea. It is time to resist in every way we can.
